With European research funds on climate change adaptation expected to increase considerably in the coming years, it is important to explore ways of spending this as effectively as possible, in particular through improving science-practice interactions for the benefit of effective adaptation in low-income countries. This was the background of the international expert workshop on 29 January 2014 organised by CIRCLE-2 and the German Development Institute. [+]
The workshop on "Adaptation Platforms in Europe: Addressing challenges and sharing lessons" was held in Vienna from 7 to 8 of November, 2013. The intention was to provide an opportunity for platform managers and developers to explore lessons learnt, experiences and challenges associated with developing and delivery of adaptation platforms. The European Union, the United States and Canada today agreed to join forces on Atlantic Ocean research. The agreement focuses on aligning the ocean observation efforts of the three partners. The goals are to better understand the Atlantic Ocean and to promote the sustainable management of its resources. The work will also study the interplay of the Atlantic Ocean with the Arctic Ocean, particularly with regards to climate change. [+]
The European Climate Change Adaptation (ECCA) Conference took place in Hamburg from 18-20 March 2013. This conference brought together scientists and practitioners working on adaptation to the impacts of climate change. The aim of the conference was to foster a creative dialogue with climate adaptation policy makers and practitioners. The theme of the conference was integrating climate into action. [+]
The Commission adopted an EU Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change in April 2013 (Launch event - 29 April). By complementing the activities of its Member States, the strategy supports action by promoting greater coordination and information-sharing between Member States, and by ensuring that adaptation considerations are addressed in all relevant EU policies. This CIRCLE-2 Joint Initiative on Climate Uncertainties' science-practice session was dedicated to the presentation and discussion of a draft version of the ‘Guide', under development, on uncertainty in adaptation decision-making supported by practical case-study examples where dealing with uncertainties was successfully accounted for (or identified but failed). During this session participants were also asked how they deal with these uncertainties so as to inform the development of the publication by sharing experiences, challenges and lessons learnt. This was accomplished by using the World Café methodology in four different discussion tables. [+]
During this CIRCLE-2 session project leaders of six bold, innovative and inspiring projects explained how they managed to implement the measures. Learn how projects managed to inspire individual households to contribute time and money in the construction of adaptation measures, how no-regret measures are taken that immediately yield positive results in the current situation and how areas are transformed in climate proof, high-quality surroundings. On 9th February 2011, the European Commission presented a Green Paper which proposes major changes to EU research and innovation funding to make participation easier, increase scientific and economic impact and provide better value for money. The changes, to be introduced in the next EU budget after 2013, would bring together the current Framework Programme for research, the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. Who are the end users of the climate scenarios? What do the users need? How should the demand be met? These were some questions raised during the workshop "Bridging Climate Research Data and the Needs of the Impact Community" organized by EEA, IS-ENES and CIRCLE-2.

The key objective of the conference is to give practitioners and decision makers at the regional political level in the Baltic Sea Region a platform to present and discuss concrete examples of regional or local adaptation to climate change. [+]
ECClima project’s goal is to predict climate change impacts, namely temperature rise, on the ecophysiology and production of estuarine organisms. Focus is made on abundant species common to a wide geographic area, in three estuaries, Minho (Portugal) in the south, the Wadden Sea (The Netherlands) at intermediate latitude, and Skibotn, Tromsø (Norway) in the north, and hence covering a large latitudinal range. The CIRCLE-2 MED sub-network hosted its first Project Valorisation Seminar outside Europe dedicated to "Integrated water management in coastal areas and climate change in the Mediterranean: North-South scientific cooperation". [+]
Israel's second "National Communication on Climate Change" summarizes the vulnerability and adaptation to climate change in Israel and includes recommended actions to prepare for anticipated climate change. It represents the impact of climate change and the needed adaptation measures in semi-arid countries. [+]
Following the successful application for a second-generation BiodivERsA ERA-Net, which started on 1st November 2010 for 4 years, the consortium is organising a Kick off conference on the 1st and 2nd of February 2011, hosted by FCT in Lisbon, Portugal.
