The ministry employs a total staff of around 1000. A total budget of 8.3 billion EURO is presently allocated to the ministry for the fields of basic issues, European and international cooperation, general education, vocational education and training, higher education, transport and aerospace research, information and communication, new technologies, health, life sciences and sustainability. Research on Climate is covered by the Hightech-Strategy on Climate Protection. Research in the Federal Republic of Germany is carried out by a lot of organisations. Universities and "Fachhochschulen" receive numerous forms of funding and support from the BMBF, in large parts administered by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The BMBF calls on project management organisations as well as independent consultants for the evaluation and supervision of project funded research.
