The Austrian Ministry of Science and Research (BMWF) is the government institution responsible for the reform of the Austrian university system as well as for research policy and scientific research programmes. The ministry develops, coordinates and finances major national research programmes such as the Austrian Genome Research-Programme "GEN-AU", the sustainable development research programme proVISION and research work in the field of social sciences and the humanities. Furthermore, the BMWF has launched several initiatives to improve chances and opportunities for female researchers, e.g."fFORTE" which intends to raise the percentage of women scientists in the areas of research and technology.

The research programme, proVISION is a programme introduced and owned by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research (BMWF). It is aimed at implementing Austria's FORNE strategy (research for sustainable development) and - together with complementary research programmes - creating the scientific basis for the country's sustainability strategy.

BMWF gained experience due to the involvement in the CIRCLE CA and responsibility for international issues as well as for the development of a self evaluation procedure along European guidelines for the national research programme proVISION.
