Description

EPA is an independent body established in 1993. Its sponsor is the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government. EPA is responsible for e.g.:

Licensing and control of large scale waste and industrial activities to ensure that they do not endanger human health or harm the environment; National environmental policing; Monitoring, analysing and reporting on the environment; Regulating Ireland's Greenhouse gases; Environmental research and development; Strategic Environmental Assessment; Environmental planning Education and guidance and proactive waste management.

The EPA has run research calls under the Climate Change Research Programme (CCRP) programme since 2007. Earlier climate change research was also undertaken under the EPAs Environmental Research Technological Development and Innovation (ERTDI) programme 2000 to 2006. CCRP project funding is provided by the Inter Departmental Committee for the Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation (IDC-SSTI). This funding provides for research in aspects of climate change, trans-boundary pollution and earth observation. The EPA is responsible for organising the calls for research, evaluating call submissions, awarding grants and also has a supervisory role in the management of projects.

Lots of experience was gained by EPA, as Observer in CIRCLE CA. EPA has also gained experience in the ERA-Net SKEP.
