Why we care about mountains - from the Alps and the Carpathians to the Hindu-Kush and Himalaya region

The public event "Why we care about mountains - from the Alps and the Carpathians to the Hindu-Kush and Himalaya region" that will take place on Friday, 16 December, 12.00 - 3.00 p.m. in the Vienna International Centre.  

The event aims at raising the awareness for mountain issues and sustainable mountain development by presenting its challenges and highlighting opportunities. Experiences from the Alps, the Carpathians and other mountain regions will highlight successful ways of cooperation.

Among the questions and topics discussed will be "why mountains matter", the need for sustainable mountain development and experiences from the Alps including the Project "Mountain Villages" and the video "SuperAlp!5 - Discovering melting Alps".

Key note interventions from high-level representatives including the Austrian Development Agency, the Permanent Secretariat of the Alpine Convention and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management will be followed by a multimedia presentation of the Austrian mountaineer Theo Fritsch.

The organization of the event has been facilitated by UNEP Vienna - Interim Secretariat of the Carpathian Convention in collaboration with the Austrian Development Agency, the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management and the Permanent Secretariat of the Alpine Convention.

The event is open for the public and it marks the Austrian contribution to the International Mountain Day (11 December as designated by the UN GA).
